I have been working hard on finding ways to improve our beach maintenance next summer. The following bullet list is meant as a briefing on the changes and additions to our beach maintenance operations that I am working on for next summer. Hopefully, these adjustments to our operations will improve the quality of our beaches.
• I intend to contract with Mike Nebelung for the daily beach raking
• I intend to contract with the Town of EL to use their new Surf Rake machine on our beaches one to two times per week. The machine is expected to be able to remove any debris and rocks from the sand. The town’s machine is much larger than the machine Plaut used last summer and should be able to pick up the rocks on South Beach. Here is a link to the machine’s description: http://www.hbarber.com/Cleaners/SurfRake/Default.aspx
• I intend to hire the town to do a full day of cleaning/rock removal with their Sand Rake machine in late spring. Hopefully, this will get the beaches ready for summer and give us a jump start on the weekly beach maintenance plan.
• Mike Nebelung is going to add rock-free sand to the harvested sand on South Beach. Hopefully, this added sand will also help alleviate the rock problems on South Beach.
• John Campion has also contacted a contractor that will bring in additional “washed” sand for South Beach, if necessary. This is a last resort because it is costly and there is no guarantee that the added sand will stay on the beach for any length of time.
